Adaptation of books into movies

Posted in Education, Entertainment on July 26th, 2008

Has it ever happened to you that you read a really good book and then when you saw the movie version of it, you felt it wasn’t enough? Well, I have. I don’t watch the Harry Potter movies as I almost always point out the differences and then I get shushed up by my friends. I didn’t like the adaptation of namesake either, although it really was a very well made movie. While reading a book, I see them in my mind’s eye just as they should be. Then, when the movies are made, it’s as if the directors are telling you this is what a character looks like and this is what a house looks like. It suddenly proves all your imaginations false.
For most readers, reading a book isn’t just reading. It’s as if we are a part of every character in the book. We travel through the pages and we build relationships. We know each character well and we know how they look and what they do. When someone else tells us that this is how it all happened, it’s not a very good feeling.
For people who just watch the movies and have never bothered to read the books, it isn’t an issue at all. They just enjoy the well narrated stories that they see on screen. For the many others like me, it’s a not so pleasant experience. Still, the movies sell, and win awards and all the readers watch them if only to compare and criticize.

Blogs are the newest entry to the net hype. Although it has been a part of the internet for a long time, it seems to have gained popularity in the recent times. More so because the likes of Amitabh Bachhan and Amir khan and Shahrukh Khan have taken to blogging. Blogs are a way to express one’s feelings and views and it is also used for marketing purposes. Many people even write journals on their blogs. Until now the majority of people did not even know what a blog meant, but now, thanks to the celebs, everyone knows. At least everyone who reads the bollywood news knows. Amitabh Bachhan, Amir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Ram Gopal Verma and many more bollywood hot shots are calling the shots in the blog world. Amitabh Bachhan recently tried to sort out his differences with Shahrukh by writing about it on his blog. He even apologized for anything that he might have done wrong. Next came Amir Khan, who after calling Sharukh a dog, apologized for it on his blog. He has even introduced his debutante nephew Imran Khan through his blog. Whether this is for publicity purposes or for getting close to one’s fans or just because they enjoy it, is beyond anyone’s knowledge. Even Jeffery Archer has a blog. He says he loves it and says Indian readers are more responsive and honest in their comments. Chetan Bhagat too has a blog of his own on his official website. Blogging has become a must do and I think you must too. It’s serious fun.
