Adaptation of books into movies

Posted in Education, Entertainment on July 26th, 2008

Has it ever happened to you that you read a really good book and then when you saw the movie version of it, you felt it wasn’t enough? Well, I have. I don’t watch the Harry Potter movies as I almost always point out the differences and then I get shushed up by my friends. I didn’t like the adaptation of namesake either, although it really was a very well made movie. While reading a book, I see them in my mind’s eye just as they should be. Then, when the movies are made, it’s as if the directors are telling you this is what a character looks like and this is what a house looks like. It suddenly proves all your imaginations false.
For most readers, reading a book isn’t just reading. It’s as if we are a part of every character in the book. We travel through the pages and we build relationships. We know each character well and we know how they look and what they do. When someone else tells us that this is how it all happened, it’s not a very good feeling.
For people who just watch the movies and have never bothered to read the books, it isn’t an issue at all. They just enjoy the well narrated stories that they see on screen. For the many others like me, it’s a not so pleasant experience. Still, the movies sell, and win awards and all the readers watch them if only to compare and criticize.

Live in relationships in India: a debate on the progress of India

Posted in Lifestyle, Social Networking on July 26th, 2008

Marriage is a holy institution in India. Over the years marriage has been respected and taken as the only way that a man and a woman can profess their love for each other through out their life. India, being a culturally conservative country in most parts, thus fails to acknowledge live-in relationships. Some consider it against religion, some against culture and some just don’t like the idea. People have even said that young people opt for live-in relationships because they want to shy away from responsibilities. They think that being in a live-in relationship means not having to try and keep it going because you have an option of walking out any day. Well, they are sadly misinformed. The people who opt for a live-in relationship don’t exactly want to part. They just live together without a legal bond saying that they have a right to stay together. And being married doesn’t mean it is going to last forever. There is more divorce cases filed everyday than you can possibly imagine. Besides, most couples do get married after a certain period of time.
Being in love doesn’t mean you won’t drive each other crazy when you live together. You can find several cases where love marriages end up in divorce. It’s better to see how compatible you are before marriage. You have an idea where you are really headed this way. Besides it’s really a matter of choice and perceptions. We have no right to judge anyone until we really know what its like. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. It’s really a matter of perspective.

Online communities

Posted in Leisure, Social Networking on July 26th, 2008

Gone are the days when communicating with old friends and making new friends was a trouble. Now keeping up with friends just needs an active net connection. The online communities such as facebook, ibibo, orkut and fropper are creating a new genre of communication in social interaction. Millions of people, worldwide log on to these sites to catch up with old friends and to make new ones. They interact, they discuss stuff and they even exchange knowledge. These online communities have even become a mode of online marketing. People market their products, showcase their talent and get huge response. There are a growing number of online communities on the net and believe it or not, people are hooked on to these sites. It has become a part of them.
Although these sites are cool and all, one has to be very careful of what he or she writes or posts. A few days back, a British girl posted an open invitation of her 16th birthday party on her facebook profile. About 400 youngsters turned up and the drunken teenagers trashed her house and party. Then there are fake profiles and hurling abuses. Quite a number of people have gotten into legal trouble for making fake profiles of famous people and for creating hate communities. Another thing one shouldn’t do is click on suspicious links. People often use these communities to send spywares and malwares to your computer. They can even hack your profile and do quite a bit of harm to you. If you are careful enough, you will enjoy these communities immensely. If not, well, stupidity almost always has a price.

Blogs are the newest entry to the net hype. Although it has been a part of the internet for a long time, it seems to have gained popularity in the recent times. More so because the likes of Amitabh Bachhan and Amir khan and Shahrukh Khan have taken to blogging. Blogs are a way to express one’s feelings and views and it is also used for marketing purposes. Many people even write journals on their blogs. Until now the majority of people did not even know what a blog meant, but now, thanks to the celebs, everyone knows. At least everyone who reads the bollywood news knows. Amitabh Bachhan, Amir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Ram Gopal Verma and many more bollywood hot shots are calling the shots in the blog world. Amitabh Bachhan recently tried to sort out his differences with Shahrukh by writing about it on his blog. He even apologized for anything that he might have done wrong. Next came Amir Khan, who after calling Sharukh a dog, apologized for it on his blog. He has even introduced his debutante nephew Imran Khan through his blog. Whether this is for publicity purposes or for getting close to one’s fans or just because they enjoy it, is beyond anyone’s knowledge. Even Jeffery Archer has a blog. He says he loves it and says Indian readers are more responsive and honest in their comments. Chetan Bhagat too has a blog of his own on his official website. Blogging has become a must do and I think you must too. It’s serious fun.
